Stephens and Muhammad Receive Post Season Honors

March 9……Angel Stephens was named 1st Team All-PSAC East and Lutfiyya Muhammad was selected to the second team by the conference coaches. 

Stephens earned second team honors last season led the Lady Wolves to a 10-16 mark while averaging 14.7 points and 9.2 rebounds.  She is the first female in more than a decade to amass over 1,000 points in her career.  Over the course of her career she also posted 29 double doubles. 

Muhammad was also a second team selection a year ago.  She led Cheyney averaging 15.3 points per game and also scored over 1,000 points in her career (includes 20 points while attending Delaware State).  She led Cheyney in steals (86) and was ranked fourth in the conference.   She  was the Lady Wolves top free throw and three point shooter.

Knight and Irizarry Selected For Pepsi Internships

March 8….Two Cheyney University student athletes were among the four Cheyney students selected as interns for Pepsi Cola.  David Irizarry (football) and Saquita Knight (tennis) work in the community promoting Pepsi products through marketing strategies and on campus activities. 

Students were chosen from over a hundred candidates.  Individuals had to write a letter and submit a resume as well as go through an interview to be considered for internship.  The students will assist in the on campus promotion of new products.  They will spread the word through taste tasting station at campus and community events in and around campus.  “As a football player I thought we could host an event around our spring game,” commented Irizary.  “I’m very familiar with Pepsi, they are everywhere on campus.”  Irizarry, a native of Allentown, PA, is finishing his freshman year.  “I love the idea of Pepsi Throwback.  It’s made with natural sugars and is currently being rolled out in several markets.”

Within the family Pepsi Brands are Pepsi (Aquafina, Mountain Dew, Sierra Mist, Sobe) Gatorade (including Propel), Tropicana, Quaker Oats and Frito Lays.

Wolves Dropped in Quarter-Final

March 2…….Cheyney (16-12) fell 76-65 to East Stroudsburg in a PSAC quarter-final contest.  It was the third time this season that the Warriors (24-4) defeated the Wolves.  Sharif Bray paced Cheyney with 24 points.  Tamir Smith added 13.

Cheyney fell behind by seven in the early going but battled back to take a five point lead at halftime.  But the Warriors went on a 15-3 run to start the second half.  Cheyney quickly answered going on an 8-1 run to tie the game.  With the game tied at 58, the Warriors used an 18-7 run in the final 5:45 to earn the victory.  It was the eleventh tie of the night. 

Cheyney struggled in the second half from behind the arc shooting 0-9.  The Wolves were out-rebounded 39-29 but managed to take 14 more shots than the Warriors.  The Wolves committed only five turnovers.
