July 24…..Cheyney University head men’s and women’s basketball coaches Dominique and Marilyn Stephens conducted their inaugural basketball camp on the University campus. The brother and sister combination are believed to be the only sibling head basketball coaches at the same institution on the collegiate level. The weeklong camp was highlighted by appearances of Wali Jones, Kenny Hamilton, Lou Williams and Tiffany Stansbury.
Jones grew up in Philadelphia playing his high school ball for Overbrook before enrolling at Villanova. He was drafted in the third round by the Detroit Pistons. His stops in the NBA included Baltimore, Philadelphia and Milwaukee. Jones ended his career with Toronto after playing one season in the ABA. Lou Williams completed his fourth season with the Sixers. Last season he averaged just under 13 points per contest while shooting 40% from the field. Williams also distributed t-shirts and signed autographs for the campers. Stansbury is the daughter of Terrance Stansbury and played her colligate ball at N.C. State before turning pro and playing in France and the WNBA.
Recent Boston Celtic signee Rasheed Wallace donated Nike apparel and Metz Food Services donated lunch. The camp T-shirts were provided by Logo Warehouse. All of the campers received Check Ball Magazine thanks in part to CEO, Little Vaughn. Frank Palmer, coach at the Sonny Hill League donated Champs Rubber Wrist Bands.
Campers were taught some the fundamentals of the game including passing, dribbling and shooting as well as some life lessons through Wali Jones Academic Action Plan and Academic Goal Setting.
Camp staff included assistant coaches Ellis Gindraw and Wanda Williams and student-athletes Angel Stephens and Dominique Curry. Marilyn Stephens Jr. was in charge of the fitness training component of the camp. |
