The applause was fierce as the commencement speaker for Cheyney University of Pennsylvania was announced, but it was counteracted by the punctuated echoing chants between the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the graduates sitting before him. “I can do anything in the world,” he said as his voice boomed from the podium, to which the graduates replied in kind.

Presidential Award for Distinguished Service Presented To Actor Terrence Howard At 2012 Commencement Program

In addition to the traditional pomp and circumstance surrounding the May 12, 2012 Cheyney University Commencement Convocation, acclaimed actor Terrence Howard was awarded a Presidential Award for Distinguished Service. Mr. Howard depicted Jim Ellis, former Cheyney University Swimming Coach in the 2007 movie, THE PRIDE.

As part of its Commencement ceremonies each year, Cheyney University presents the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award to a faculty member for demonstrated excellence in teaching students.The 2012 award was presented to Professor Teresita Fernández-Viña at the May 12 Commencement program.

Cheyney University Names Peter Hughes 2012 Class Valedictorian

Peter Hughes has been named the Cheyney University Class of 2012 valedictorian. A member of the Keystone Honors Academy, Peter has worked throughout his tenure at Cheyney University to earn this distinction. According to Dr. Tara Kent, Dean of the Keystone Honors Academy, "His academic accomplishments are commendable. He has maintained a solid cumulative grade point average of 3.98 and he consistently earned the stature of Dean’s List recognition. Additionally, for three consecutive years Peter has been recognized at Cheyney University’s Annual Honors and Awards Convocation for earning the President’s Award for Academic Excellence.

The conference is held as a community service by Media Area NAACP. Cheyney University Awarded Home Depot Retool Your School Grant

Larry Green, Interim Vice-President for Institutional Advancement reported today that Cheyney University has been selected to receive a Tier Two $10,000 grant from this year’s Home Depot “Retool Your School” competition. Award selection was based on a combination of online voting and the strength of the proposal according to Home Depot’s Advisory Board members. All members of the CU Community share in earning this award by voting for the University. CU received just under 100,000 votes.

It was the kind of supper where grandparents reminisce about the "old days" as they enjoyed a leisurely dinner together. Walker, Jr. Janelle is a general science student and Keystone scholar, and has an extensive CU heritage. Her parents James and Rochelle McKelvey are both Cheyney alumni. Walker, a Sophomore, is a Communications Major planning a career in radio and TV broadcasting.

PCN (Pennsylvania Cable Network) brought the Pennsylvania primary conversation right into CU's Ed Bradley Studio on April 18 as part of the Town Hall program which covers controversial political topics debated throughout the Commonwealth. The evening allowed for some intense dialog between the CU audience and the panelists including Prof. Janet Manspeaker, Gil Spencer, editor of DELCO Daily Times, former Senator Joe Sestak, local radio personality Dom Giordano, and candidate George Badey.

The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation hosted the HBCU Legacy Lecture Series on CU's campus on Tuesday, April 17, 2012.The program opened with a student roundtable discussion, “Road to Redemption.” Special guest speaker, Kwame Kilpatrick, former mayor of Detroit, shared frankly his experiences in prison after making a bad judgment call involving his personal life. Kwame stated that his prison experiences changed his life and inspired him to follow a different path.

Jazz saxophonist Ravi Coltrane brought a great show to Cheyney University's Marian Anderson Music Center in April. Regarded as one of the finest saxophonists in music, he was joined by jazz pianist/composer Glenn Zaleski, bass player Desron Douglas, and drummer E J Strickland. Students, faculty, alumni, and community residents enjoyed the evening with jazz.

Psychology Club Presenting Campus Feud Game Show on April 30

Social and Behavioral Sciences constituent groups have organized a mock game show entitled Campus Feud. The game show, modeled after Family Feud, is a collaborative effort between the Psychology Club and the students currently enrolled in Advanced Experimental Psychology (RPS 411). It is planned for Monday, April 30th at 12:30 p.m. in DSS 117. Open to the public this is a fun activity to end the semester; a sign-in sheet will be present at the event and participants may qualify for credit or extra credit in some of your classes. Members of the Social Behavioral Sciences Learning Community are encouraged to attend.

SOAP Takes a Stand Against Poverty

SOAP - Students Against Poverty - took their stand on Wednesday April 18 at the Marcus Foster Student Center vestibule. The energetic delegation showered passersby with enlightening information and statistics about the crushing poverty in our country. More than 100 facts were collected by the group, and each one was posted in an orange and white paper patchwork display which glowed in the afternoon light.
