Braid Takes the Reins

Joan Braid has been named head Volleyball Coach at Cheyney University. Braid has a history of turning around programs. She has done it at Bryn Mawr College and at Garnet Valley HS and countless club teams. "I'm familiar with the great history of Cheyney University,” stated Braid. “While at Bryn Mawr my team played at Cheyney a couple of years ago. I was impressed at how smoothly the match ran, the enthusiasm of the athletes, and the support the fellow students provided to the Lady Wolves. I'm really looking forward to working with the volleyball program, and I would like to thank Cheyney University Athletic Director Ruffin Bell for giving me the opportunity.”

Denise Hill and Travonya Kenly added 14 each while Danielle Mines was credited with 13. Nichel Bryant was credited with 10 digs.

The Cheyney University Women's Volleyball Team had their first taste of action this year hosting Mercy College and Goldey Beacom College in a tri-match. The Lady Wolves were featured in match number one against Goldey Beacom. Goldey Beacom prevailed 3-0. Dijanirah McIver paced Cheyney with 13 attacks and newcomer Travonya Kenly added nine attacks, three assists and a service ace.

Homecoming wasn’t as glamorous for the Volleyball team.  Coach LuLu Banks and company traveled to Kutztown to play in the PSAC Challenge.  The Wolves took on three regionally ranked teams in IUP, Slippery Rock and California.  Cheyney came up short in each contest falling 3-0 to their fellow PSAC schools.

This week the Lady Wolves look to regroup before playing their final home contest of the year on Tuesday night against cross town rival West Chester.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Cope Hall.  The Wolves will honor their two seniors Doni Kelly and Karma Jackson.

Cheyney will end the season with road contests at Millersville on next Saturday and at Shippensburg on October 24.

Cheyney dropped three road matches in three nights this past week.  The Lady Wolves fell at Shippensburg (3-0), Bryn Athyn (3-0) and Lincoln (3-0).  "We are playing much better," stated rookie head coach Sandra Dobson.  "Against Bryn Athyn and Lincoln we were winning games until the very end.  It's a shame the season is coming to an end this week. 

The Lady Wolves will only have two more chances to notch one in the win column.  Cheyney will host Millersville in their final home match of the season on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in Cope Hall.  Before the game , the Wolves will honor the lone senior on the team, Lulu Banks.  The Lady Wolves will conclude the 2005 campaign at West Chester on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Wolves and rookie head coach Sandra Dobson are still looking for their first victory of the season.  Cheyney traveled to Kutztown to participate in the first of two PSAC East West Crossover weekends.  Cheyney took on teams from Slippery Rock, Indiana (PA) and California (PA) only to fall to each of them 3-0.  Cheyney now stands 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the PSAC East. 

Cheyney will travel to Millersville on Tuesday for a PSAC East contest.  Cheyney returns home on Thursday night to face Lincoln University at 7:00 pm in Cope Hall.
